In 2008, shortly after getting married, Dr. Jacobs' wife began having severe TMJ and jaw related pain from stress she was experiencing as a first year teacher. In 2011, Dr. Jacobs had recently graduated physical therapy school and decided to take classes and research the various treatments for TMJ pain relief. He had tried several traditional medical approaches to relieve his wife's pain over the years, but nothing worked.
One morning, Lindsay woke up with lock jaw and was unable to open her mouth. She couldn’t talk or eat and asked Dr. Jacobs to do anything to relieve her pain. Out of sheer desperation, he started experimenting with different manual maneuvers both inside and outside her mouth. After just a few minutes, he asked Lindsay to open her jaw and to his surprise, she was able to do so without any pain.
After this initial discovery, Dr. Jacobs committed the next four years to researching and developing ASTR’s theories, methodologies of treatment, specialty tools and over 125 maneuvers to treat the full body. In 2015, he received approval for three ASTR patents. Dr. Jacobs recently completed his first retrospective cohort study for neck patients and is in the process of publishing this study. His long-term goal is to continue developing new tools and methodologies for ASTR and to begin teaching his specialty to other practitioners throughout the country.
