Rebound Headache
Rebound headaches usually occur in individuals that have a history of migraine and/or tension headaches where the individual overused headache medications.
Symptoms of Rebound Headache
- Daily headache, usually in the morning
- Nausea
- Restlessness
- Memory problems
Medications that can cause Rebound Headache
Taking frequent or large doses of the following drugs could cause a rebound headache:
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
- Daily caffeine
- Codeine
- Narcotics
- Aspirin
- Headache medications that contain caffeine (e.g. Excedrin, Anacin)
- Imitrex, Zomig
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. Aleve)
- Phenerbel-S, Ercaf, Cafergot, Bel-Phen-Ergot S, Ergomar, Bellergal-S, Wigraine, Cafatine PB and Migergot
- Fioricet, Supac, Goody’s Headache Powder, Fiorinal
Treatment for Rebound Headache
- Gradually reduce the medication dosage
